White Pony Express is a local 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping food-insecure residents of Contra Costa County obtain quality food. WPE rescues food from grocers, restaurants, and markets that otherwise would go to landfills. This high quality, perishable food is brought to the WPE warehouse in Pleasant Hill, then sorted and shipped out to 80 partner organizations such as churches, schools and food banks to deliver to those in need. While WPE currently handles on average 15,000 pounds of food per day, the need is greater than that, especially with the effects of COVID-19 and the recent surge in inflation. WPE could reach more needy people with the purchase of a refrigerated transit van to supplement the equipment they already own. Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary has approved a project to raise funds for the purchase of this van, currently estimated to cost $76,060.
