Art in a Box, to create boxes of art supplies to be distributed to students suffering from homelessness. Mount Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) is a public school district in Contra Costa County, California. It currently operates 29 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, and 5 high schools, with 7 alternative school programs and an adult education program. MDUSD established a Homeless Outreach Program for Education (HOPE) to provide educational and related services for homeless students in first through 12th grade. HOPE provides meals for students, transportation to/from school, and referrals to resources in the community. Based on current data, homeless children in MDUSD have grown to 528. It was that mission and the number of homeless children that drew the attention of our Rotary club. It struck a nerve, and, as Rotarians, our immediate first response is, “how can we help”? School & Community Services developed and maintains partnerships with public and private agencies to improve the lives of young people and increase their success in school. They exist to positively impact underserved communities and special populations by removing barriers to academic and social/emotional well-being through empowerment, advocacy, and compassion. It is through the HOPE program that Art in a Box was created.
