Durham is a bedroom community with a wealthy per capita income. Under California’s funding model for schools, educational funding is limited for our school district. Chronic Chromebook shortage in Durham Schools is one example of being in this awkward position. When schools switched to distance learning last year due to COVID-19, all teachers became far more familiar with utilizing Chromebooks as an instructional device. Chromebooks are now an essential part of the instructional model for schools. Our club donated 45 Chromebooks to Durham High School in 2020-2021 with a generous $5,000 grant from District 5160. We plan to provide more Chromebooks to Durham Schools to narrow the gap in 2021-2022 rotary year. During our initial discussion, we learned from Durham Unified School District that they are still in need of 160 Chromebooks to ensure all students have a Chromebook assigned to them from 5th through 12th grade. The district will continue this allocation model into the future as Chromebooks have a four-year lifespan and is looking for support from Rotary to get the project started. The dollar amount quoted by the supplier is $48,483.60 which includes 160 Chromebooks and associated licenses. Knowing our club’s funding is limited we requested and received support from Chico, Chico Sunrise and Paradise club that they will each supply $500 in funding to qualify our project a multi-club endeavor. Durham Rotary Club has committed approximately $6,500 to this project and we will donate to Durham Unified School District as many Chromebook devices as possible with the final funding.
