Smoke Alarm Project Roaring Success

Smoke Alarm Project a Roaring Success

The dust is beginning to settle and by all accounts the district-wide Rotarians At Work Day Smoke Alarm Project was a great success proving once again that Rotarians working together can have a major impact on our local communities. Here are some of the results.

Steve Hagenbaugh honchoed the Redding East, Redding West and Redding Clubs and he reports over 100 homes visited with 50 alarms installed and 150 batteries replaced. 25 Interact Club members also pitched in to do the heavy work. There was coverage of the event by the local newspaper and TV station.

Bill Mannel with the Paradise Club reports that 61 homes were visited with 12 alarms installed and 80 batteries replaced. Typical of this over-achieving club, they did this project a week early.

Dan Garcia with the Antioch Club says that 21 homes were visited with 27 alarms installed and 42 batteries replaced. The Brentwood Home Depot made a donation and The Contra Costa Times covered the event.

Edi Birsan led a team from the Concord-Diablo and Clayton Valley-Concord Sunrise Clubs and reports that in addition to the alarms and batteries, they would replace a light bulb and clean a lamp. How’s that for service. Jeff Kasper would know.

The 5 clubs of Alamo, Danville, Danville/Sycamore, San Ramon and San Ramon Valley partnered together under the able leadership of Dennis Harvey. After a presentation by the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District on the proper placement of smoke alarms and explaining the File of Life Program, the 59 volunteer Rotarians were divided into teams of four and given the names, addresses and maps of the homes to be visited. By the time all of the teams had reported back to command central (Sunny Glen Senior Community Center), 136 homes had been visited with 140 smoke alarms installed and 375 batteries replaced. The San Ramon Home Depot made a generous donation and Randy Perkins with Safe Security donated 200 batteries. Dennis sure knows how to run a good show.

A big thank you to all the participating clubs for making this a Rotarians At Work Day to remember.
