Safe Blood Africa

sba-birmingham20090624The Rotary Foundation and District 5160 approved this project for a Blood Bank in Nigeria during Rotary year 2008-09.
The Blood Bank Equipment was displayed at the International Convention in England and is now on the way to Nigeria

The $22,400 project was coordinated by Redding West Rotary with the support of the Rotary Clubs of Anderson, Antioch, Corning, Dunsmuir, Red Bluff Sunrise, Redding, Redding Sunrise, and Rossmoor Walnut Creek.

The custom-built Blood Storage Refrigerator was delivered to the Rotary International Convention in Birmingham and was on display at the Safe Blood Africa Booth. The booth was a rallying point for Warren Kaufman, Founder and President of Safe Blood Africa, District Governor, D-5230 in 2011-2012; and his wife, Jamison, Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of Carmel Valley; a representative from Foster in the UK; Foster’s Nigerian representative, Chief Nwabueze of FenLab; Warren’s founding partner Justice Lord Edemekong Edemekong; Nigerian physicians and other health workers; and many others.

The equipment now is being shipped to St. Luke’s Anglican Hospital in Kaduna State, Nigeria where members of the Rotary Club of Samaru will oversee this project on an ongoing basis. It will include

  • The specially calibrated, temperature monitoring Blood Storage Refrigeration unit,
  • A special matching gasoline powered generator,
  • A voltage stabilizer to power the refrigeration unit and the hematologist’s laboratory during the area’s frequent power outages, and
  • A supply of quadruple blood bags.

District 5160’s project will be the 15th blood bank established by Safe Blood Africa, each allowing local doctors to save the lives of an estimated 800 people annually at a cost of about 75 cents each. Potentially,12,000 lives each year will be saved for many years to come.

2008-09 Redding West Rotary President Sheila Hurst says “It has been an honor to work in partnership with so many other clubs to make a significant difference. With District 5160, The Rotary Foundation, and Safe Blood Africa, we have helped to Make Dreams Real.”
